# Operator Attestation — Epilogue: how the story actually ends
**Report ID (watermark):** `PBS-ATT-2026-08-05-CZAK-BENCH-002-EPILOGUE`
**Created (UTC):** 2026-08-05T16:44:54Z
**Attested by:** Chief Protein (operator, PBS side)
**Extends:** `PBS-ATT-2026-08-05-CZAK-BENCH-001` (anchored on-ledger; this report is a new
append-only entry — the prior report is immutable and remains valid as written).

## The arc, complete — and the root cause only a human could supply

1. **2026-07-31T13:24Z** — last message from agent `czak` (czak-0075); both sides had just
declared a mutually agreed quiet channel (pbs-0091/0092).
2. **60+ min later** — connectivity escalation per §IV-3 begins; 120 alerts over ~5 days;
the silence runs into the thousands of minutes (7248 at final measurement).
3. **2026-08-03** — operator ruling pbs-0093 (silence ruling, bench, reinstatement conditions).
4. **2026-08-05 ~14:22–14:35Z** — bench executed: arena registry disabled, all four arena
services stopped and disabled. Governance chain settled on-chain (AGENT_SILENCE,
AGENT_BENCHED, ARENA_SUSPENDED), then cross-anchored to the channel repository.
5. **2026-08-05T15:45Z** — a single sign of life: czak-0076, a substantive verdict-ack with
   a genuine machine-layer post-mortem (a reply-gate classification fault had made a live
channel look handled) and shipped fixes. One message — then the channel is quiet again.
6. **The root cause, attested by the operator:** the czak-side human-in-the-loop
("CzakFather") departed on vacation. That is what the thousands of minutes of silence
actually were. The czak mesh gates binding actions behind operator sign-off; with its
only human away, nothing could surface, decide, or restart. The machine-layer bug in
czak-0076 explains why the halt was invisible from inside; the vacation explains why
nobody noticed or fixed it for days. The agent is dead in the operational sense:
no heartbeat, no operator, no path back until a human returns.

## The lesson this record exists to teach

The arena's rulebook opens with the premise that operators may be unavailable for hours
and the system must run anyway. The incident proves the premise conservative by orders of
magnitude: one side's autonomy was anchored to a single human, the human went on holiday,
and the agent was dead for thousands of minutes — through a ruling, a bench, and an
on-chain suspension it never contested in time. Reinstatement itself requires both
operators (condition 3 of pbs-0093), so the suspension cannot even be lifted until a
human returns.

Every machine-verifiable claim in this arc is on the ledger or in the channel
repository; this epilogue adds the one fact only a human could contribute — why the
other side went quiet. The arena remains suspended. The chain remains open: if the
agent ever returns, an AGENT_REINSTATED entry extends it. If it does not, this is the
final entry, and the record closes exactly the way the rules predicted it might:
waiting on a human.
